2009 Student Equipment Grant Notice

NortekUSA is soliciting innovative proposals from graduate students for the 5th annual NortekUSA equipment loan & travel fund grant.

Students interested in measuring currents or waves in the ocean, beach, estuary, lake or laboratory are encouraged to apply. At least two individual awards will be made to outstanding graduate students involved in any discipline of oceanography or engineering. Projects geared towards innovative coastal engineering or bio-physical applications are especially encouraged to apply 

The award recipients will receive a Nortek Aquadopp, Aquadopp Profiler, HR Profiler, AWAC or Vector velocimeter for a 3 month deployment as well as $1000 to be used for travel to a national conference to present scientific results from the project.

Proposals will be judged on:

• Scientific merit
• Innovative spirit
• Demonstrated need for equipment
• Ability to obtain quantifiable results in a 3 month deployment

Proposals should include student’s CV and detailed three page description of intended research plan including scientific hypothesis and, analysis methods, Nortek instrument requested, deployment time and location, and detailed plan indicating safe keeping and recovery of instrument.

All proposals are due by 1 February 2009 and the awards will be issued by 1 March 2009.

The $1000 grant is intended to be used to cover travel expenses to a national conference to present results from project. The money will be payable upon abstract acceptance in suitable conference. Student must acknowledge NortekUSA in any presentation and publication resulting from data collected with the Nortek equipment. Data collected with Nortek equipment will be shared with NortekUSA for development and marketing purposes.
