NortekUSA Technical Symposium -- Newport, Rhode IslandIn partnership with the Marine Institute of Memorial University and the New England Marine Renewable Energy Consortium, we invite you to attend the 2011 NortekUSA Technical Symposium. The annual Technical Symposium offers three outstanding days of presentations, technical discussions and networking opportunities focused around acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurement technology. One day will have focused presentations and discussions around the theme of Renewable Energy -- Engineering & Environmental Assessment Problems and Solutions. View more information about the Call for Papers, Key Note Speakers and Registration. |

NortekUSA Student Equipment Grant -- Call for ProposalsNortekUSA is soliciting innovative proposals from graduate students for the 7th Annual NortekUSA equipment loan & travel fund grant. Students interested in measuring currents, turbulence, or waves in the ocean, beach, estuary, lake or laboratory are encouraged to apply. Projects geared towards innovative oceanographic or engineering studies for renewable energy applications (offshore wind, wave, tide) are especially encouraged to apply. View complete details including proposal format and deadlines. |

Report on Ice Measurements with AWACNortek has developed a new measurement capability with the AWAC that allows the Acoustic Surface Tracking (AST) to observe sea ice thickness and maximum ice keel draft from AWAC ADCP instruments mounted on the sea bottom or on a subsurface buoy. AWAC's with ice monitoring capability have already been supplied to numerous government, commercial and academic groups in the USA and Canada for ice monitoring projects. A report on one of the first commercial applications of this new capability will be presented at the OCEANS conference in Seattle on Wednesday, 22 September. The paper from the conference will be available for release on 20 September. Please contact your NortekUSA technical representative to receive a copy of this paper or email inquiry@nortekusa.com . |

Hurricane Earl Measurements in Outer BanksThe Weather Channel's Jim Cantore wasn’t the only one to visit the Outer Banks during the passing of Hurricane Earl early this month. Many of you logged into the USACE Field Research Facility cross-shore array website and watched the action in real time. All four Nortek AWACs and two Aquadopp Profilers continued to record currents and waves through the storm and an incredible data set was gained. Wave heights reached in excess of 4m and currents were over 1 m/s during the peak of the storm. Archived data are available for the 8 m depth location on the USACE FRF website. |

Inductive Modem Aquadopp's in AntarcticaAfter a successful deployment of five Nortek Aquadopp Current Meters under the ice in Antarctica, NortekUSA has supplied five additional Aquadopp Current Meters with integrated Inductive Modems (IM) to researchers at WHOI for new field projects in Antarctica. The new IM Aquadopp Current Meters will be used to support the Antartic Geological Drilling Project (ANDRILL) run by University of Nebraska, WHOI and Ohio State University. The Aquadopp's will be deployed through several hundred meters of sea ice and positioned to measure the current velocity structure over the top few hundred meters of ocean below the ice. These velocity measurements will provide critical information to allow drill managers to determine the safest drilling equipment and methods. WHOI selected the Nortek Aquadopp Current Meters because of their proven history of excellent performance in low scatter conditions and the integrated inductive modem capability that will provide real-time current data through hundreds of meters of seawater and ice to the surface in the harsh Antarctic conditions. |

More Real-Time Current Monitoring in Ports & HarborsNortekUSA and the Oceanscience Group have received multiple contract awards from the US Government for its unique ATON buoy mount system with the “Clamparatus”. The ATON System facilitates observation of real time navigation data by securing the Nortek Aquadopp Profiler and associated data transmission equipment to standard Aid to Navigation buoys. Current velocity information from the Nortek Aquadopp Profiler on the Clamparatus is continuously telemetered to the shore station, and from there offered to ship operations to assist navigation through the NOAA PORTS system. The contracts will supply the ATON System for US Coast Guard ATON buoys, further expanding the availability of real time data in major ports and bays. Read a recent report about the ATON System published Sea Technology. |
