Through funding by Canada’s National Research Council (NRC) Program for Energy Research and Development (PERD), Nortek has collaborated with scientists Ralf Bachmayer and Brad de Young to integrate a Nortek Aquadopp Profiler on a WEBB Glider.  The team selected the 400 kHz system in order to measure current profiles over most of the continental shelf while the Glider is resting at the surface.  Nortek engineers developed a custom transducer head for the WEBB Glider which fits in the standard 2.5” PUCK port in the science payload bay.  NRC engineers built a streamlined fairing to reduce drag while the Glider is underway and have written an open-source “proglet” to run the Aquadopp Profiler through the WEBB Glider science computer.

 

Nortek has also developed custom Doppler systems for deployment to 1000 m for both WEBB and SeaGlider models.  Let us know how you want to use your Glider for current profile measurements!
