Introducing the

NIP

Nortek Internal Processor

Your solution to real-time wave and current data telemetry over low-bandwidth channels

The NIP is a small processor
which fits within the AWAC and
other Nortek equipment.

If you need to transmit real-time wave and current data through low-bandwidth channels, the Nortek Internal Processor (NIP) is your answer!

In many applications, raw wave and current data are simply too large to transfer over low-bandwidth channels such as underwater acoustic modems, Iridium or GOES. The logical solution is to use the NIP to process the raw wave data into more concise wave estimates and spectra. These processed data are considerably reduced (100-1000 bytes) as compared with the raw wave data (25-50 kilobytes). The NIP also solves the problem of using third party controllers and integrating wave-processing code into the users’ own software.

The NIP is a scaled down PC, running Windows CE. It communicates through standard serial ports. The processor is capable of low power sleep modes, and is shut down when not in use. The unit is positioned inside the base of the AWAC or any other Nortek product, and can be retrofitted to any existing system. The NIP can output user selectable data sets in ASCII or BINARY with the NIPTalk software.

Features:

  • Internal processing of data reduces telemetry demands
  • Highly customizable data format
  • Fits inside existing equipment – no external canister required
  • Low power consumption

User Selectable Wave Parameters:

  • Hs, Tp, Peak Period
  • Mean Period, Mean Direction
  • H10, Hmax, Tmax, UI
  • AST Time Series
  • Energy Density Spectrum
  • Directional Spectrum
  • Spreading Spectrum
  • Full Directional Spectrum
  • Velocity Profile
  • Analog Sensors

Applications:

  • Use with AWAC to process wave data
  • Use with Aquadopp Profiler and ATON System to send real-time current profiles over Iridium or GOES.
  • Use with Vector to change sampling rate depending on flow conditions.
  • Use to interface any Nortek equipment to any node of a real-time observing system.

The NIP can be operated in 2 ways:

Master: The NIP decides when to perform a measurement, and reports back to shore when the measurement is taken and the data are processed.

Polled: A polled mode where the user on the shore-side decides when to take a measurement. The data are sent automatically or when requested.
