Vessel software

Software

Nortek vessel mounted systems come with two software packages: the SurveyVM realtime monitoring software and the ExploreP data analysis and post processing software.

SurveyVM

The SurveyVM software provides realtime monitoring of current speed and direction at different depths below the vessel.

A hull mounted current profiling sensor will measure the water speed and direction relative to the vessel, i.e. the vessel speed through water. What SurveyVM does, is to combine “raw” current profile data from the sensor with speed and heading data from external inputs like DGPS/Gyro. The corrected values, or difference between the two, represent the net ocean current relative to ground.

SurveyVM has by reputation a very intuitive user interface, which has been greatly appreciated by navigators ever since its introduction back in 1996. At present our goal is, despite technological advances and developments,  to leave this popular data presentation software virtually unchanged.

 SurveyVMScreen

SurveyVM presents corrected or raw data in the following graphics and tables:

 - STICK PLOT (Graphical). The most popular and commonly used presentation, showing mean current velocity and direction as sticks along the vessel track, referenced geographically to the earth coordinate system. The values are presented according to user specified averaging (time + depth).

 - CURRENT PLOT (Graphical). Showing current sticks at selected depths together with vessel with correct heading orientation.

 - PROFILE PLOT (Graphical). Shows current speed and direction vs. depth below the vessel. This graph includes information from all measurement cells specified and gives an indication of all current phenomena inside the instrument range. The profile plot also presents SNR (signal to noise ratio) vs. depth, providing an estimate of signal quality and measurement range.

 - AUXILIARY INPUTS. Tabular presentation of position, speed and direction data from DGPS and Gyro.

 - SENSOR DATA. Tabular presentation of current profile data.

  • Data export - SurveyVM offers easy-to-use functionality for data export, either as Nortek binary data or as ASCII files.
  • Calibration - System calibration is required whenever a sensor has been changed or repositioned. The calibration routine is quite easy to perform – simply make two 5-minute runs and press one button.
  • Serial Output - The serial port on a computer can be configured to output any parameter of interest, e.g. to the vessel navigation system.

ExploreP

The ExploreP sofware is a unique tool for post processing and quality control. It offers the abilty to graphically investigate both corrected and uncorrected sensor data and is very useful for evaluating the system's acoustic signal behaviour and overall performance.

ExplorePScreen

The ExploreP software offers:

  • Contour plots (colour coded values) showing current speed or direction as well as SNR vs. time and depth.
  • Time series of current speed/direction and SNR at selected depths
  • Profile plots of selected parametes
