MetOcean station at Steilene

A meteorological station was previously operated at the same location by the Norwegan Institute for Water Reserach (NIVA).  Unfortunately, it was knocked out by lightening in 2005 and never repaired. The station was of great interest both to workboats and pleasure boaters.  In recognition of this fact, and because it a convenient station for testing, Nortek decided in 2007 to put up the resources necessary to get the station back on the air.  The station was rebuild from scratch as a full blown MetOcean station with GPRS communication to the Mobile network.  We have been testing and evolving the stations for the last 12 months and we intend to support and maintain the station for at least the next year or two. After that time it will be up to the community of users around Oslo to decide what to do with it.

In addition to wind, temperature, pressure and rain, the station is equipped with an AWAC that measures water waves and currents.  A WEB camera facing toward the city of Oslo takes still photos every 10 minutes and the photos are collated into a brief movie showing the evolution over the last 24 hours. Detailed description of the instrumentation and operating principles is available on the WEB site.

Nortek would like to thank Oslo Friluftsråd for their cooperation in obtaining the necessary permission and for making the site available to reestablish this popular service.
