Awac wap Data Format
Up to Waves
Looking at my wap files I realize that I have 2 data formats files.
One with 23 and one with 21 columns
Different acq. software and releases used (Awac-AST, SeaState) but after a careful look that's is the summary.
Here you have an example:
05 09 2005 10 50 42 0.46 -9.99 0.58 0.77 2.86 3.24 -9.99 200.06 56.05 189.39 0.77 9.79 1024 0 0.01 227.2 1030
05 09 2005 13 48 31 0.19 -999.99 0.25 0.32 4.22 4.81 4.22 267.08 65.89 285.43 0.78 9.778 0.115 314.65 64
First has 23 and second 21 col.
It seems that first one follows:
1 Month (1-12)
2 Day (1-31)
3 Year
4 Hour (0-23)
5 Minute (0-59)
6 Second (0-59)
7 Significant height (Hm0) (m)
8 Mean 1/3 height (H3) (m)
9 Mean 1/10 height (H10) (m)
10 Maximum height (Hmax) (m)
11 Mean period (Tm02) (s)
12 Peak period (Tp) (s)
13 Mean zerocrossing period (Tz) (s)
14 Peak direction (DirTp) (deg)
15 Directional spread (Spr1) (deg)
16 Mean direction (Mdir) (deg)
17 Unidirectivity index
18 Mean Pressure (dbar)
19 No Detects
20 Bad Detects
21 Current speed (wave cell) (m/s)
22 Current direction (wave cell) (degrees)
23 Error Code
The question is: second format (21 col) is the same without 19 and 20 columns?

Dear Òscar,
The format of the .wap has been changed several time due to customers requesting new parameters. The .whr file describes the format - please have a look at the corresponding .whr.
I do agree that it seems like it is column 19 and 20 that is missing. The detection parameters has been there since the AST was introduced. Could one of the files have been processed with a non-AST processing method?

Hi Jonas,
I only found in the hard disk a very few .whr files. All I've found describes only 23 columns wap data files. So no help for us and still don't know exact format of our data.
I understand that some customers want another format but I don't think that everybody suffer for that. In my humble opinion format must not be changed because you can have another software running from data acquired by awac.
I don't understand fully tha last question. We only run Awac-AST or SeaState software to acquire Awac data
Another question is:
Which is the recommended software and release to acquire Awac data?
Best,
Òscar
Dear Òscar,
I understand your frustration without that helping you much. Do you have any other files than the .wap available for the 21 column series?
I have checked the source code of the .wap generation and 21 column for AWAC AST has never been an option. From the example you sent it seems quite clear that the no detects and bad detects are missing, but they have been there all the time for AWAC AST wave processing.
The most recent software is the preferred choice since it has the most functions and fewer bugs. If the software you are using is working fine and you are dependent of having the exact same format you should keep the one you have.
Best regards
Jonas
