Minimum separation between Vectrino+ transmitters?

Posted by Tim Maddux at December 19. 2011
Hi all,

We have a researcher visiting the wave lab in January who would like to have 2 of our side-looking Vectrinos in the large wave flume observing tsunami uprush and downrush.  He would like to have them co-located in the cross-shore and separated in the alongshore, with the transmitter faces oriented towards each other.

My question is: how close can these Vectrinos be without their transmit pulses interfering with each other?  Note that we're not doing the custom setup/configuration to synchronize transmit pulses, as we are slaving the Vectrinos to sample-on-sync with our own analog systems.

Thanks!

I managed to talk to Atle about this and his initial thought was 0.5 m. The big problem is there is nothing to attenuate the signal when the transmitters are facing one another, so range attenuation will be the only thing to decrease signal strength. Interference should show up as low correlation (similar to a weak spot).

The sample-on-sync, like you said, won't be able to take advantage of the ping synchronization available in firmware. So, if you can alter the setup so they don't face one another that's your best bet.
