New velocity-ranges

Posted by Rosendahl at January 29. 2007
Hello Nortek!

We own a Vectrino+. We use it for velocity-profile measurements in a wind-wave-facility, hence we have quite some variation in the velocities over the depth (closed channel with partially compensated back-flow, up to 20m/s wind).

How difficult is it for you to add some more velocity-ranges? For example, going from 0.01 to 0.1 to 0.3 m/s is quite a step! Wouldnt it be an advantage to keep the setting as close as to the (expected) maximum velocity at some certain depth as possible?

Best regards,
Patrick Rosendahl

Dear Patrick

Yes and no.  The reason for going to a smaller velocity range is to reduce the random noise in the data. If the main interest is to measure the mean velocity, the range matters very little.

The other issue is the ambiguity jumps that can occur if you exceed the velocity range. In other words, you would be best served to have a good sized buffer between the actual velocity and the maximum velocity that can be measured with the range you set. This reduces the chance that you will have spikes in the velocity data.\n\n
