Single ping velocity measurements

Posted by Pedro J. C. Ribeiro at July 15. 2011

Hello,

Our company has done several AWAC deployments, mostly for Petrobras, a big oil company from Brasil. Recently this client asked for raw data files that depicted the velocity measurements ping per ping, in opposition to .v1 .v2 .v3 files witch shows only averaged data. I know that AST produces a file like this for the wave measurements (extension .wad) but couldn't find one for the current bursts. Is there a way to get this kind of data out of the .wpr file? The client intention is to perform a standard deviation analysis for each burst separately.

Thanks,

Pedro

Hi Pedro

When collecting wave data, the AWAC stores the velocity data from one level at either 1 or 2 Hz (depending on frequency and set-up).  There is no similar thing for the normal current profile - the instrument vector averages the data and stores only the mean.

In general we store only the data that people find meaningful to analyze.  The reason we store all the wave data is that it allows people to use their own brand of spectral analyses in post processing.  Similarly, we store all the current profile burst data when the instruments collect data in HR-mode because there are many different ways to analyze, quality check and report this data.  I am not quite sure I understand why Petrobras may want to look at each individual current profile in standard mode - the data would be quite noisy.

Best regards, Atle Lohrmann
