calculating TKE dissipation
I'd like to measure turbulent kinetic energy dissipation in the water column with a 2MHz ADP. It has 160MB, so I have enough memory to collect every ping in beam coordinates at 1 sec with 10cm bins in 2m of water. I'm not sure which is the best way to calculate TKE dissipation. Any ideas? The two options I am aware of are the inertial dissipation method describe in Lorke and Wuest 2005 and a structure function technique described in Wiles, Simpson, and Rippeth 2005.
Hmm, I am not quite sure this would work very well unless you either have a very energetic environment or are using HR firmware. The standard deviation of the single-beam data will be very high and I am afraid the instrument noise will mask out the natural variability in the flow.
From a purely mathetmatical point of view, maybe the simplest approach would be to assume that the Reynolds stresses are small compared to the turbulent kinetic energy?
